Kinja'd!!!

So a superior told me — as I continue working in the field — to make sure I have plenty of wipes, gloves, masks, and sanitizer on hand. I reminded him that I hadn’t seen any in any stores here for over two weeks. In fact, all I have is a little old 6oz bottle I found with my seldom-used camping gear. My employer isn’t offering or ordering sufficient supplies for its employees visiting multiple job sites, and they want us to just walk out and... go get some. Somewhere.

In that same breath, I want to send my personal thanks to hoarders, who are also likely working from home right now, who have made it so difficult to obtain basic cleaning products those who still have to work with the public. Thank you for your fearful, thoughtless consumption such that every trade from healthcare providers to plumbers can’t stay safe, while you won’t even be using one-tenth of your stockpile. But hey: you’ll be okay.

Glad that at least the scalpers can’t resell their 500 bottles of handwash for $30 each on Amazon or eBay , a small consolation.

They don’t get much smaller than that.

I guarantee you that 10% of the population will be throwing out tons of hoarded food 18 months from now....

I read somewhere once (and I admit I don’t have the reference,) about the most common ways that sailors would die after their ships were sunk in WWII. All the expected major reasons where there, oil fires on the water, hitting debris when jumping off the ship, getting sucked down with the ship, etc but coming in at number 5, getting pushed underwater and drowning from other panicked sailors trying to climb on top of you. Some humans are capable of some pretty heroic acts, others just the opposite.

I’m sure I could spare a tube  of Clorox wipes—we always have some around for cleaning, camping , etc . I certainly don’t have a hoard but you need them more than I do right now. Get in touch if you want to swing by and get some . Can’t help you with gloves, masks, or hand sanitizer though.

This is why I kind of struggle a bit with price gouging. I mean, yes, its reprehensible to profit off of other’s misery. But, if a tiny bottle of hand sanitizer suddenly cost $1 0 instead of $1 , people who needed one bottle could still buy it, but they sure as hell couldn’t afford to  fill an entire shopping cart with it. There’s probably a middle ground where prices could be marked up just enough to discourage hoarding, but not so much as to completely price people totally out. Some retailers would be ethical enough to figure out where that is, but most can’t be trusted to.

Considering how many people are losing their incomes completely, price-gouging on essentials, at any amount,   is as unethical as hoarding, if not more so.

Feeling your pain. I’m in a similar situation. I am told I’m essential personnel, and must report to work. Dishonest people over the last two weeks have practically drained the airport’s supply of Purell (filling up water bottles, ziploc bags, etc). One person even tried to steal the entire bolted-to-the-ground stand with hand sanitizer to take on the plane with them.

The one bright spot is that, as of now, my job and the jobs of my employees are not in danger of being axed (although we are expecting to start having to assign furlough days) . But of course, that can all change too.

Thank you for the offer which you may eventually regret! I’ve still got 3/4 of a container of Lysol wipes that would normally last me an eternity if I didn’t have to leave the house during a pandemic . I think if/when I run out of sanitizer, I’ll just stay home and suffer the consequences.

The only other solution is to limit quantities people can buy of certain items. Which, I guess is pretty easy to do, but people can still run store to store, which I guarantee you is happening already. You have to figure out some way to get people to just buy what they actually need and no more, otherwise these shortages will continue for the next 2 years or 3 years or however long it take for the virus to go extinct or evolve into a strain that can’t affect humans.

Im not sure it's a good thing that people are still working. Although Freddie Mac let me know they still expect me to pay my mortgage on time. We can't forget what's important here!

Check “sold” listings on ebay.  Shit is trickling through.

Quantities should have been limited the instant demand spiked. Problem is people were smart to that even before they tried. At a WinCo nearby, there was a massive cargo van, six adults. Each went in one at time and bought everything they could. Then they repeated but made sure to hit different cashiers so as not to be noticed.

The lady in front of me last time I went had maybe 800 bucks worth of... Everything. And three bundles of toilet paper. I had none, just some black beans and frozen shrimp. The cashier says, “Weren’t you in here this morning.” “uhhhh uh uh nnn-no I mean no— so what time do you open tomorrow morning, again?” So there are people out there with stockpiles enough to support maybe dozens of households short term? Even a few? So that's how many suffer as a result.

Eventually, we’re going to have to bring back a WWII-style ration card/stamp system. Its going to take awhile to implement, but we’ve got plenty of time. That would solve the problem though, it worked before.

This is why in any sort of water safety class, you’ll be taught to extend a stick /rope/life preserver/etc. to a drowning person, rather than trying to keep them above water yourself. Even if it could easily be done, the drowning person is likely panicking and has a decent chance to drown both of you.

But at the same time, that’s thousands of bottles just sitting there not doing anyone any good. At least if they’re being sold, they’re (likely) being used.

All this illustrates to me is that some people are committed enough to being assholes that they’ll keep at it even if it’s harder or costs more resources (time, money, fuel, whatever). Making life harder for vulnerable people who aren’t assholes in the hopes that you can neatly out-asshole the comfortable people who are   is not a desirable  solution.

Let me know if you change your mind—at the rate I use them while working from home (like, less than one a day? Maybe two  if I get gas?) a couple of containers will last me months. I don’t think the hoarders will keep adding to their hoards indefinitely

My wife made hand sanitizer for her aunt and uncle. Aloe Vera gel plus alcohol. You can use rubbing alcohol or everclear. Recipes to be found on the web.
